2. Canary Islands don't get their name from the canary birds. Canary Islands are actually named after dogs - getting their name from the latin 'Insula Canaria', meaning 'Islands of the Dogs.' Canary birds are actually named after the islands.

Interesting list: My favorite: 10. The first public anti-smoking campaign in modern history was initiated in Nazi Germany. At least they had the right idea about something.

Probably not the only right idea they had. There are a few more, surely. The Volkswagen Beetle for one. And one more that I'll save for a future 'ten things...' post.
