Regular readers of this blog will be familiar with The Sentence - a series where I review Hollywood and Bollywood movies in, well, one sentence. I have been meaning to compile a top 5 of my favourite reviews for quite some time now - and this group writing project is the perfect reason to delay it no longer.
1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968): Who says they didn't make expensive, visually stunning but meaningless music videos for classical music chartbusters?
2. 300 (2006): 300 celluloid Spartans meet a heroic death while attempting to defend Frank Miller's glorious past against the mighty juggernaut of his current work.
3. Flags of Our Fathers (2006): The only saving grace for war is that such powerful and moving cinema can result from it.
4. The 36th Chamber Of Shaolin (1978): I remember watching this movie as a kid long long ago; I remember watching this again as a kid last night.
5. The Departed (2006): In case you missed the plot, it gets shot in the head at point blank range midway through the movie.
Title: Spider-Man 3 (2007)

The Sentence: The real villians getting trapped in Spidey's webs are the scriptwriters, producers and (the otherwise talented) director of this movie franchise; and serves them right too.
Title: Perfect Stranger (2007)

The Sentence: Having watched this movie is motive enough for murder and, I suspect, might also make the eventual crime pardonable in some courts of law.

The Sentence: Unlike it's racing driver protagonist who only finishes first or last, the movie crosses the finish line in the company of the multitude in the middle - outstanding neither in excellence nor in mediocrity.

The Sentence: The title says 'Mr.Bean' but the movie itself is about 'Mr.Has Been.'
Title: The Namesake (2006)

The Sentence: There are many many reasons why this film shouldn't be missed, but none more compelling than the understated brilliance of Irfan.
Title: The Last King of Scotland (2006)

The Sentence: As a character study of a brutal African dictator, it is short on the goods; as a story of a white man in black Africa, it is long on naivety.
Title: Namastey London (2007)
MisEntropy Meter: 1/10
The Sentence: My advice to the city of London will be to file a defamation suit pronto.
Title: Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
MisEntropy Meter: 7/10
The Sentence: The kind of sunshine that makes you forget your gloom of the moment, which for me was the despair of seeing 'Babel' and 'The Departed' do well at the awards last year.
Title: Traffic Signal (2007)
MisEntropy Meter: 5/10
The Sentence: Much of the movie is stuck in a traffic jam of delightful characterisations; and when the lights turn green for the plot to move, it ends up taking the turn towards preachy self-righteousness.

The Sentence: Not every bomb explodes as intended; this is one of them.

The Sentence: I was told it was a story about one man and his dogged pusuit of happiness - but when I watched it, there were about 300 of us in the theatre joining in the pursuit on his behalf.
